My Dream Guy Became A Dog [c3]

Surprised by the jade-like touch of her cheek on his fingertips, Fang Jingshen’s fingers unconsciously lingered for a few extra seconds before he pulled back his hand as if nothing had happened. “Are you leaving now?”

“Yeah,” Su Xiaotang nodded as she shook herself out of an entranced state.

“I’ll send you home.”

“Eh? I-it’s okay!” Flustered, Su Xiaotang waved her hands to decline.

Fang Jingshen ignored her and began walking. “Let’s go.”

With no choice except to follow, Su Xiaotang trotted after him. “But Meatball’s still inside!”

“Meatball?”

“My dog.”

“I’ll bring him over. Wait for me here.”

As she watched Fang Jingshen’s tall, straight figure walk away, Su Xiaotang was flooded by a mixture of emotions. Yes, he had merely offered to take her home out of courtesy, however that did not deter her heart from beating as if a heavy metal rock band had taken up residence in her chest.

It did not take long for Fang Jingshen to return.

The nanshen she was deeply in love with, leading her pet. What a picture it made… The damage to her heart was too great.

*

Tonight she had confessed to her nanshen, he had brought her dog back, and at this very moment she was sitting in his passenger seat.

It was all like a dream.

Su Xiaotang never thought this beautiful dream would turn into a nightmare the next second.

Two glaring headlights suddenly cut through the darkness in front; a white van had lost control and was barrelling straight into them.

A loud bang. As blood clouded her vision, the last thing Su Xiaotang saw before losing consciousness was Fang Jingshen covering her with his body.

*

Su Xiaotang woke up on a hospital bed. Other than her bandaged head, she was not injured anywhere else.

There were quite a few of her classmates in the hospital room. Keeping an arm raised to support her dizzy head, she stood and grabbed Jiang Hua, who was closest to her. “Where’s Fang Jingshen? How is he?” she asked. Her embarrassment from losing face at the class reunion was forgotten in her desperation.

Shu Tian flew into a rage as soon as she set eyes on the chubbier girl. “Su Xiaotang! Look at what you’ve done to Jingshen! How could he have gotten into a car accident? Why is he so heavily injured, but you’re standing here perfectly fine?!”

“Why are you blaming Xiaotang? The van’s tires got punctured and that’s why they crashed, alright?” Li Ranran rushed to her defence and turned to Su Xiaotang. “Are you okay? Do you feel funny anywhere?”

“I’m fine! Just what happened to Fang Jingshen?”

Li Ranran opened her mouth to answer but was immediately cut off by Shu Tian. “If it wasn’t to take her home, would Jingshen have gotten into an accident?”

“Have some sense, woman! If I didn’t know better I’d think you’re Fang Jingshen’s girlfriend with how you’re acting! If anything, he only took Xiaotang home because of what you said tonight. Why don’t you blame yourself for this accident!”

“You…”

“Okay guys, stop arguing. This is a hospital so let’s quieten down a bit,” said Jiang Hua, who stepped in as peacemaker. “Fang Jingshen’s got a really severe head wound. He just finished surgery so he’s still in ICU, but the doctor said it was a smooth surgery. If his state doesn’t turn worse within the next twenty-four hours then they’ll transfer him into a normal room.”

In the solemn silence, a young man wearing a suit walked over as he talked into his phone.

“Miss Su, you’ve gained consciousness! I’ve got something to ask you. The dog that was in the car, is he yours?”

“Ah! Yes!” Su Xiaotang nodded quickly. She had forgotten about Meatball!

“He’s at the police station right now. They want you to pick him up,” said the young man.

He looked somewhat familiar to Fang Jingshen, except while Fang Jingshen always had a cold aura around him, this man seemed friendly and approachable. A smile played at the corners of his mouth despite not wearing any expression on his face.

“Please excuse me, but you are…?”

“Ah, yes, hello. I’m Fang Jingshen’s little brother, Fang Jingcan.”

“I’m extremely sorry about what happened today, I…”

Fang Jingcan stopped her tirade. “I’ve already grasped the situation. It wasn’t your fault, Miss Su. There’s no need to feel responsible.”

His words only made Su Xiaotang feel even more miserable. If it had not been Fang Jingshen blocking her with his body, it might have been her lying in the ICU right now.

“Shall I take you to the police station?” asked Fang Jingcan.

“Oh! No need, I’ll go by myself. But Fang Jingshen…”

“You don’t have to worry about things on his side. I’ve already made arrangements, so there’s nothing you can do even if you stay here. Go home and rest well. I’ll update you as soon as something happens.” Fang Jingcan smiled gently in reassurance and Su Xiaotang felt her nerves relax in response.

“Thank you, thank you…” Grateful for his help, she bowed deeply and left.

*

Su XIaotang had just stepped inside the police station lobby when she heard Meatball’s loud barking from somewhere inside.

“Meatball!” she called as she hurried over to the dog.

“Are you Su Xiaotang? Thank God you’re finally here. Hurry up and take him away! He’s been going wild for almost an hour and we have no idea why!” The policeman on duty latched onto her, his eyes sparkling as if Su Xiaotang was his life saviour.

“Meatball! Meatball, what’s wrong? Are you hurt?” There was something off about Meatball. He was never this fidgety even when she was not around, yet now he continued to bark aggressively while straining against the leash held in the policeman’s hand.

He must have gotten a shock from the accident, thought Su Xiaotang. Seeing that the fur around his neck had chafed off from struggling against his leash, she quickly crouched down and pulled his head into her arms.

“Hush, it’s fine now. Don’t be scared, everything is okay~ Your owner is here~” she said as she gently patted and stroked Meatball’s head and back.

Leaning against Su Xiaotang’s chest, which was rising up and down rapidly due to her hurry to get here, Meatball—who had been so aggressive just seconds ago—suddenly became obedient. All movement and noise ceased.

Su Xiaotang sighed and kissed his face as a reward for his obedience. “Let’s go home.”

*

Too much has happened today. Su Xiaotang was exhausted, but how could she rest when Fang Jingshen was still dangling between life and death? So she paced around restlessly while fighting off waves of anxiety.

A buyer from her Taobao snack store rang to ask for their order to be sent out. “The shop owner’s nanshen is unconscious from getting into a car accident. I won’t open business again until he’s awake,” was the curt answer Su Xiaotang gave. Then she posted up the same words as a notice on the front page of her shop site.

Meatball had calmed down and was taking a leisurely stroll around the room. He rubbed his paws on the carpet and jumped on the sofa, then sat there sternly with his solemn gaze fixed upon Su Xiaotang.

She filled his bowl with a bit of food.

Meatball glanced at it, then lifted a paw—and knocked the bowl over!

Su Xiaotang glared at him. “I’m not feeling happy today, alright? Don’t misbehave, or I’ll beat you up!” she said as she filled the bowl once more.

And Meatball promptly knocked the bowl over again.

“Fine then, don’t eat and starve for all I care,” she snapped as she smushed Meatball’s face. She was really riled up now and had no more patience left for her dog, so she resumed pacing, unable to stop as if she had been winded up by a spring.

Eventually, Meatball became fed up with watching her walk non-stop and let out a gruff bark.

Su Xiaotang turned around and latched onto Meatball’s neck, her face scrunching up in despair. “What should I do… What if he doesn’t get better… If I had known this would happen then I wish I never started liking him. It should’ve been me that got hit! Why am I not the one lying in ICU? We may have been born apart at different times, but I wanted to die together with him! But even though today’s been the worst day of my life, it’s also been my happiest day. I got so close to him for the first time in seven years. The first time I spoke with him! I sat in his car and was the damsel in distress!!! Actually never mind. Take out the ‘damsel’ in that sentence…”

Su Xiaotang was at breaking point. Her nerves fizzled out from today’s events, she began bashing her head against the sofa as she rambled on.

Meatball pulled her back by her shirt collar while she was in the middle of her sobfest. It was only then that she remembered; there was a wound on her head, too! But she was far from finished with releasing her pent up stress and instead of bashing her head, she started rolling from one end of the sofa to the other end, then back again.

Meatball did not look too impressed. If anything, he was probably lamenting over what a nimble fatty she was…

*

Su Xiaotang had finally quietened down. Tears silently streamed down her face as she rested her head on her arms, her lips gingerly whispering that name which she had called so many times in her heart. “Fang Jingshen…”

Something landed on her face a moment later.

It was Meatball’s paw.

But then something astounding happened.

Meatball jumped down from the sofa and hopped onto the chair in front of the table where Su Xiaotang’s laptop was placed. On the screen was her Taobao snack shop and an open chat window.

Next, his front two paws began tapping away on the keyboard. Su Xiaotang watched in astoundment until he finished and turned to bark at her.

There was something in Meatball’s eyes that seemed very human-like.

At this moment, his eyes were telling her to go look at the laptop screen.

Filled with sceptic confusion, she went over to the laptop—and saw a row of words in the chat screen window: [I am Fang Jingshen.]

Chills raced up Su Xiaotang’s spine and she giggled nervously. “Ha, haha… When did I type this? How come I don’t remember?”

She would sooner believe aliens were real than believe her dog had typed these words! In what world could that be possible? No, it was simply unimaginable!

Meatball’s paws began tapping on the keyboard again, and this time she watched as he typed each word: [Su Xiaotang! I’m Fang Jingshen!!!]

“Who… which jerk taught you this?! Who would prank someone like this? I’m gonna have a heart attack…”

Su Xiaotang swayed on her feet and touched her forehead before passing out.

*

It was already morning when Su Xiaotang woke up again. She would have believed everything was a dream—if she did not see the Word document on her laptop screen and the dog sitting beside her. A dog whose eyes were at once serious, wordless and gloomy. Meatball had been waiting for her to wake up.

[Su Xiaotang! I know this sounds absurd and unthinkable! As the one who actually turned into a dog, I’m having more trouble digesting this than you! But this is real! It’s already happened! This is not a dream! Please believe me! You’re the only one I can rely on now! If you don’t believe me, test me however you like when you wake up! As long as it’ll convince you that the animal in front of you is Fang Jingshen!]

So many exclamation marks in one paragraph only worsened Su Xiaotang’s rattled state.
